Sergai Regent HT Erry Nuradi said global climate change had a very severe impact on Indonesia because its geographical position was located on the equator between two continents and two oceans. From that geographical position, it causes the Indonesian state at all times to experience seasons that are opposite and even extreme. In one area there was drought and water shortages, in another there were floods, landslides, strong winds and tidal waves whose timing was difficult to predict in advance, said the regent.

More Difficult

As a result of the opposite seasons, the production of agricultural products, especially food crops, is becoming increasingly difficult and creates food insecurity and even inter-island transportation and communication links are often disrupted, he said. According to the regent, there are several causes for the current global climate change, namely the thinning and melting of sea ice at the earth’s north pole and the reduction in tropical forest areas in the hemisphere, including in Indonesia due to human activities.

Reducing the bigger impact of climate change, the Sergai Regency Government since 2006 until now has a high commitment to nature conservation, including every year on Earth Day, planting tens of thousands of trees in various locations including on Berhala Island, the coast, the mountains. and watersheds and other areas that are considered prone to natural disasters such as floods and landslides, said Erry Nuradi.

Therefore, through the moment of Earth Day which is commemorated every year, the regent asked the community including NGOs, environmentalists to work together with the Sergai Regency Government to promote reforestation in this area. Now it is planted, later the results will be enjoyed by our children and grandchildren, Erry Nuradi hoped. Previously, Deputy Regent Sergai H Soekirman who is also an environmentalist on the occasion said that leaders or people who do not care about the environment and nature will destroy nature. When nature is damaged, the people will suffer the consequences.

Earth or nature does not get angry in a short time, but that anger can come in a certain time if nature is not taken care of for its sustainability from now on. (bah)
